Here is today’s crossover conundrum: When is a Cadillac SRX not a Cadillac SRX? Answer: When it’s a Saab 9-4X.
Peter Dörrich probably won’t like that answer too much. But he probably wouldn’t argue about it, either, since he was the engineering honcho for both vehicles when they began their gestation in 2005.
Back then, of course, Saab was still a division of General Motors, and Dörrich—a second-generation Saab lifer—oversaw development of the front-drive architecture that’s the foundation for the SRX and the 9-4X. And like his Cadillac colleagues, he insists that these foundations have nothing to do with GM’s Theta architecture (read: Chevy Equinox); the official code at Saab is TE.

The 2012 Challenger SRT8 392 is the epitome of all that was good in the early ’70s with Dodge. A sensory overload on four wheels, I recently had occasion to spend time behind the wheel and regain a little of my lost youth. Power comes in the guise of a 392 ci (6.4-liter) SRT HEMI V8 engine. It pounds the pavement with 470 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 470 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm. Zero to 60 mph takes a few ticks less than 5 seconds.
Power increases over the previous SRT8 by a total of 45 hp and 90 lb-ft as a result of significant modifications made to the previously formidable 6.1-liter HEMI engine. Changes include the addition of a new cold-air induction system, an active intake manifold, variable cam timing, high-flow cylinder heads and size increases for both the intake and exhaust valves to maximize airflow, combustion and efficiency.

Subaru Forester, Impreza and Saab 9-2X recalled over control arm corrosion. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a safety recall covering 295,123 vehicles, a pair of Subaru models and a close relative from Saab. The recall concerns front control arms that may fail if corroded, making the vehicle difficult to control. The action covers select 2003-2008 Forester crossovers, 2002-2007 Impreza models and some 2005-2006 Saab 9-2x hatchbacks, the latter heavily based on Subaru mechanicals.
In April, NHTSA launched an investigation after receiving seven complaints from owners of affected vehicles. In two instances, owners reported losing control of their vehicle due to control arm failure. The agency’s investigation revealed the front lower control arms may break at the hanger brackets due to corrosion if exposed to salt or humid environments.
This is a geographic recall, meaning that Subaru will inspect the degree of corrosion and either replace or rustproof the control arms on vehicles registered for use in the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island and West Virginia.
Saab dealers will be responsible to inspect and repair affected 9-2x models as necessary, including the possible rustproofing or replacement of control arms. Owners who think that their vehicle may be covered under the recall are urged to contact their dealer.

Toyota has been showing off its plug-in hybrid Prius since it debuted in concept form at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Japanese automaker is getting ready to deliver the 2012 production version, and we just found out that it will have some significant changes over the prototype versions we’ve seen so far. Report: 2012 Toyota Prius PHEV to feature selectable EV mode, full regen.
The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle boasts two unique features; a selectable EV driving mode, and the ability to apply recaptured energy to the electric-only driving range.
The selectable EV driving mode will be quite useful for trips requiring the use of a highway or that cover longer distances than simple in-town errand running. This will allow Prius PHEV drivers to conserve energy for electric-only jaunts. A button will allow you to turn the EV mode on or off.
Any run-of-the-mill Prius hybrid uses regeneration to replenish the battery. In the protoptye PHEVs, no more energy can be recaptured and stored for later use than the regular non-plug-in model. That means there was no way to extend EV-only range without plugging back in. On the production version of the Prius PHEV, the car will be able to take advantage of that regenerated energy, and extend the time the car can spend in EV mode.

2011 Chrysler 300.

What is it? The updated 2011 Chrysler 300 is the latest model from Chrysler to go through extensive updates. The main exterior changes include a new grille with seven horizontal blades in a liquid-chrome finish plus the new Chrysler badge. The windshield has been moved back three inches with thinner pillars that Chrysler claims improves visibility by 15 percent. The proportions are the same as the outgoing model, but Chrysler has refined the sedan's look. Interior upgrades include available heated leather seats and hand-sanded wood accents on the instrument panel, doors, console, and steering wheel. An 8.4-inch touch screen infotainment system called Uconnect Touch will include Garmin navigation, climate control, plus other convenience features such as gas price check. Chrysler says the 300 will have class-leading safety features including forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, active cruise control, ESC, and a full compliment of air bags. The engine will be a new flex fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 delivering 292-hp. The existing 5.7-liter Hemi V8 producing 363-hp will be standard on the 300C Limited trim. Pricing is set to start at $27,995 (including destination). We found the previous generation 300 roomy, and, with the V8, had quick acceleration, but fuel economy was poor at 16 mpg. Our last tested V6 model returned 19 mpg overall. Finally, inside the cabin we thought that visibility was limited due to the thick roof pillars.
